NEW YORK, May 11 (Reuters) - Shares of Royal Caribbean (RCL.N) fell over 8 percent on Monday, a day after the company said two of its crew members are recovering from a probable infection of the H1N1 flu virus.The crew members tested positive for the virus popularly known as swine flu earlier this month, while aboard a Serenade of the Seas cruise ship that visited Mexico in late April.Medical swabs from both individuals have been sent to health officials to determine if the H1N1 flu had been present.
One crew member was isolated on May 1 and the other on May 4, the Miami-based company said in its statement. Both were treated with Tamiflu and can no longer be a source of an influenza infection.No other crew members had flu-like symptoms, the company added. One guest reported symptoms, but tested negative for the virus.The crew members had been on a 14-night cruise that visited two cities in Mexico just before Royal Caribbean and its rival Carnival Corp (CCL.N) (CCL.L) halted port calls in Mexico on April 28.
The cruise ended in San Francisco and immediately embarked on another 14-night trip to Alaska and Canada that ends May 16.The first crew member returned to work after a seven-day isolation period, while the second worker could be released as early as today, a Royal Caribbean spokeswoman said on Monday.Royal Caribbean shares were down 8.1 percent to $15.71 in early afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Carnival shares fell 2 percent to $27.31.
